The Metabolism of the Organic Acids of Tobacco Leaves
نویسنده
چکیده
In an earlier study of the effect of culture of excised tobacco leaves in darkness in solutions of a number of common organic acids (1)) it was noted that the behavior of the malic and citric acids in leaves cultured in (+)tartrate differed little if at all from that observed in the control samples cultured in solutions of inorganic salts. However, the so called “unknown acid” fraction, i.e. the acidity due to acids other than malic, citric, and oxalic, increased to an unusual extent. It accordingly seemed probable that tartaric acid is neither metabolized itself nor does its presence affect the metabolism of the normal organic components of the leaves under the experimental conditions. The development of chromatographic methods for the determination of the organic acid components of extracts of plant tissues has recently made it possible to examine this result more closely. It has been found that (+)-tartaric acid, the form of this substance which occurs in grapes and in a few other plant tissues,l is readily taken up by tobacco leaves as its

متن کاملThe Organic Acids of Rhubarb (rheum Hybridum)* Iii. the Behavior of the Organic Acids during Culture of Excised Leaves
The organic acids of the rhubarb plant have been repeatedly investigated and brief reviews of the literature are to be found in the papers of Culpepper and Caldwell (1) and of Allsopp (2). The latter investigator has recently studied the quantities and distribution of the acids of the plant throughout the year, and has clearly shown that these substances play an active part in the general metab...
متن کاملA Description of Reference Ranges for Organic Acids in Urine Samples from A Pediatric Population in Iran
Background: Organic acids refer to a family of compounds that are intermediates in a variety of metabolic pathways. Many organic acids are present in urine from clinically normal individuals. Elevated levels of urine organic acids cause to the organic acidurias, disorders in which some metabolic pathways in organic acid metabolism are blocked. The present work identified major and minor urinary...
متن کاملExperimental Study and Modeling of Supercritical Extraction of Nicotine from Tabacco Leaves
In this work, the solubility of nicotine extracted from tobacco leaves, found in the north of Iran, in supercritical carbon dioxide has been measured. Also the effects of pressure, temperature, extraction dynamic time, and the organic co-Solvent on the amount of nicotine extracted from tobacco leaves have been investigated. It should be stressed that in order to reduce significantly the num...

Oxalic acid has long been regarded as an end-product of oxidative metabolic reactions in leaves. It is widely distributed in plants although the relative quantity present is not commonly great; nevertheless, in certain genera characterized by highly acid saps, such as Oxalis, Rumex, Begonia, and Rheum, oxalic acid may be the organic acid component present in greatest proportion. In tobacco, a s...
